Over the weekend, I was gifted a Leica M2 that has been unknowingly sitting on my family’s shelf for years (thanks mom!) while visiting my family. With the camera appearing to be in such great condition, I felt incredibly lucky, and had to immediately run some rolls through it. During my time with the camera, I noticed that there is a bit of a shutter lag on the lower shutter speeds, specifically from 1-1/30th. No problem, I thought, I’ll stick to a low aperture and 1/60th while shooting indoors. I put about 3 rolls through, and yielded work I was pleased with.

I continued to shoot an additional 2 rolls with the mindset that the higher shutter speeds, 1/60th-1/1000th would be totally fine.
I was wrong : (

Turns out, the both 1/500th and 1/1000th aren’t working very well either. Worse off than if I was using the lower speeds, actually. I had it looked at by my local shop, and was advised the best way to get it repaired is to send it to a specialist, as my shop just didn’t have the tools needed for repair. While disappointing to hear, I think it’s well worth the price to make sure it can reliably turn out results, and return this heirloom of a camera back to its former glory. There’s only a few real techs available other than Leica themselves, and sending it to Leica usually costs a pretty penny and a pretty long turn-out time. I spoke to one of the specialists outside of Leica over the phone, YYeCAMERA, and based off of our conversation I feel confident in sending my camera his way for CLA.
Good news is, I didn’t spend those entire two rolls shooting at the damaged speeds. Here’s a couple shots that came out alright.
